The teams at the top remained there in the sixth week of the California Community College Men's Volleyball Coaches Association Top 10 State Poll with Irvine Valley staying at No. 3.
The Lasers improved their record to 7-1 with a 25-12, 25-18, 25-20 win over San Diego Mesa at home last Friday.
IVC has won seven matches in a row.
And it has swept its last three opponents.
Irvine Valley, which is second in the state in team hitting percentage, hit .381 on the night.
Sophomore middle blocker Matt August had 15 kills, four blocks and hit .737, sophomore outside hitter Patrick Furlong added nine kills and six digs, sophomore outside hitter Brennan To had five kills, freshman libero Kelsey Yogi finished with seven digs and sophomore setter Austin McBain had 29 assists and five digs for the Lasers.
On the year, August ranks first in the state in hitting percentage at .519 and blocks per set at 1.79 and fifth in kills per set at 3.34.
Furlong ranks eighth in the state in kills per set at 3.21. Kelsey Yogi is fourth in the state in digs per set at 3.17 and total digs with 92 and McBain is fourth in the state in assists per set at 10.10 for Irvine Valley.
Long Beach City, the only undefeated team left in the state, stayed on top of the state poll for the sixth straight week.
LBCC kept its record perfect at 12-0 with two more sweeps last week. Long Beach City defeated LA Pierce, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17 on Wednesday at home and then beat Santa Barbara City, 25-13, 25-17, 25-22 at home Friday. Long Beach City hit a super impressive .556 in the opening set against Santa Barbara City on the way to the win. And lots of Vikings contributed. Six players had four kills or more in the game for Long Beach City. Victor Villarreal led the way with 8 kills on 10 swings with just two errors. He also had three aces and three blocks. Miller Davis added seven kills. It was Long Beach City's sixth sweep in a row and the team has still dropped just two sets all season.
Orange Coast stayed at No. 2 in the ranking. It won both of its matches last week and went to 9-2 on the year. Orange Coast swept at Palomar and at home against Grossmont last week. In the Pirates' 25-20, 25-8, 25-18 win over Grossmont last Friday, Wyatt Henson had 12 kills, hit .647 and had four blocks for the Pirates. Clark Steele contributed seven kills and hit .545.
After Irvine Valley at third, Santa Barbara City and Santa Monica flipped spots in the rankings with Santa Barbara City going up to four and Santa Monica dropping a place to fifth. Santa Barbara City split matches last week, beating Santa Monica in five sets on Wednesday in the match of the week. The Vaqueros came out on top, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12 at Santa Monica.
Each team had big performances with Santa Barbara having four players with at least 10 kills, highlighted by Kyle Skinner with 15 kills and Blake Lockhart with 13 kills. Skinner also recorded 15 digs in the match and Zacariaz Mancha had 41 assists.
For Santa Monica, Andrew Dalmada finished with 17 kills, hit .364 and had 17 digs, Vecas Lewin added 13 kills and four blocks and Hunter Douglas ran the offense with 48 assists.
