Men's volleyball team sweeps, wins seventh match in a row

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team won its seventh match in a row and recorded its third straight sweep with a 25-12, 25-18, 25-20 win over San Diego Mesa in a nonconference match at home on Friday night.

The Lasers, who are ranked third in the state, improved their record to 7-1 overall.

During the seven-match win streak, IVC has dropped just four sets.

In the opening set on Friday, the Lasers led just, 7-6, but then turned it on and finished the set out with a 18-6 run.

Irvine Valley did the same thing in the second set. Tied, 12-12, Irvine Valley scored 13 of the final 18 points in the set to win. Sophomore middle blocker Matt August finished the second set with back-to-back kills.

IVC was up big in the third set, 12-3, but found itself in a tight one after San Diego Mesa went on a 8-1 run to pull within 14-12.

August answered with a kill to put IVC ahead, 15-12.

Two more kills by the 6-7 August gave Irvine Valley a 17-13 lead.

August, who leads the state in hitting percentage and blocks, got Irvine Valley to match point at 24-19 with a kill. And then two points later, he smashed another kill to give Irvine Valley the win.

San Diego Mesa saw its record fall to 1-8 overall.

August ended the night with 15 kills, hit .737 and had four blocks. He improved his hitting percentage to .519 on the year.

Sophomore outside hitter Patrick Furlong added nine kills, six digs and two blocks, sophomore outside hitter Brennan To had five kills, freshman libero Kelsey Yogi contributed seven digs and sophomore setter Austin McBain had 29 assists and five digs for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers play again next Wednesday at home, hosting LA Pierce at 6 p.m.
