Men's volleyball team opens with a win and a loss at OCC Quad

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team opened its 2018 season by splitting matches against tough teams in the Orange Coast Quad event on Saturday.

Irvine Valley fell to Long Beach City, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17, 25-15, in its morning contest on Saturday.

Freshman outside hitter Sean Carroll and sophomore outside hitter Patrick Furlong each had 10 kills for the Lasers. Sophomore middle blocker Matt August finished with eight kills, five blocks and hit .333, freshman libero Kelsey Yogi finished with 12 digs and sophomore setter Austin McBain had eight digs and 30 assists for IVC.

Irvine Valley bounced back with a 25-16, 23-25, 28-26, 17-25, 15-7 victory over Santa Monica in the afternoon.

August had another impressive performance, finishing with 13 kills, 14 blocks and hit .364.

Freshman outside hitter Trent Williams had 11 kills, seven digs and hit .500, Furlong ended with 10 kills and seven blocks and Carroll had seven kills.

Yogi chipped in 11 digs and two aces and McBain ran the offense with 36 assists. He also had three blocks.

IVC hosts Hope International University at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then is at home again on Friday against St. Katherine at 2 p.m.
