Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team handed Grossmont its first Pacific Coast Athletic Conference loss in a wild match at Irvine Valley Friday night.
The Lasers won the first two sets, dropped the next two and then out-lasted Grossmont in the fifth and final set.
Irvine Valley came out on top, 29-27, 25-19, 17-25, 23-25, 15-13.
The win lifted Irvine Valley's record to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in conference, while Grossmont fell to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference.
The Lasers halted the Griffins' five-match win streak.
Freshman outside hitter Garret Costello led Irvine Valley with 14 kills. Freshman opposite Kyle Radecki added 13 kills and freshman outside hitter Ruben Lopez contributed eight kills.
Sophomore setter Peter Van Liefde finished with 38 assists for the Lasers.
IVC led the first set, 24-22, but saw Grossmont score three straight points to go up, 25-24.
Grossmont then had set points at 25-24, 26-25 and 27-26. Each time IVC had an answer. The Lasers tied the set at 27-27 on a kill by sophomore middle blocker Robert Ryley.
After Grossmont hit out to give IVC a 28-27 lead, Radecki finished the set with a kill.
The Lasers started slow in the second set and trailed, 6-2, but then turned it on.
Up, 22-18, Irvine Valley scored three of the final four points. Costello had a kill, Van Liefde recorded an ace and Ryley came up with a block to put Irvine Valley up two sets.
But Griffins roared back to take the third set and the held on late to win the fourth set.
Irvine Valley was within 19-18 in the fourth set after a net called on Grossmont. And IVC was within 22-21 before Grossmont won three of the final five points. Joe Mazzeo ended the set with a kill.
The fifth set was tied, 3-3, when Irvine Valley reeled off five straight points to take an 8-3 advantage. Radecki had a kill and two blocks during the streak.
But Grossmont rallied with a 9-2 run and went up 12-10 on a combo block by Dylan Hall and Ryan Benson.
Irvine Valley didn't let the match slip away, however.
The Lasers tied the set at 12-12 after two straight Grossmont hitting errors.
A kill by Costello put Irvine Valley up, 13-12. It was tied at 13-13 after a kill by Grossmont's Hall.
The Griffins then served out to give Irvine Valley set and match point.
And Radecki came through with one of his biggest kills of the night, blasting one down the line for the win.
Irvine Valley plays two more teams from San Diego next week. The Lasers are at Miramar on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before hosting San Diego Mesa next Friday at 6 p.m.
