No. 1 men's tennis team starts playoffs with easy victory

Irvine Valley was ranked No. 1 in the Southern California in the 3C2A Regional Playoffs.

And there was a reason why.

The Lasers rolled past No. 6 Bakersfield in a first-round postseason match, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon at home.

IVC was ahead, 2-0, before the match even started as Bakersfield defaulted at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Irvine Valley went up, 4-0, after it won all three doubles matches and received the walkover at No. 6 singles and then freshman Lucas Torres finished things out for the Lasers with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 5 singles spot.

Unlike the regular season, matches are ended once a team reaches the required five wins in the postseason.

To start in doubles, IVC received the win at No. 3. The duo of freshmen Nick Grove and Luciano Pardo won, 8-2, on the top court and then freshmen Patrick Riggs and Mimi Covino came out on top, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles to help put the Lasers way ahead early.

Irvine Valley now moves on to play third-seeded Glendale next Tuesday at home at 2 p.m. in the second round. Glendale defeated Orange Coast, 6-2, Tuesday afternoon.

IVC beat Glendale, 5-4, in a tight match at home on Feb. 13.
