Tennis team shuts out Bakersfield in nonconference action

The Irvine Valley men's tennis team continued to show why it is the top-ranked team in Southern California by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with a 9-0 nonconference victory over Bakersfield on Friday morning.

IVC won eight of the nine matches in straight sets to stay undefeated on the year at 7-0.

The 9-0 win was the Lasers' fifth of the season.

Irvine Valley showed its depth in the lineup once again. The Lasers dropped just nine games in doubles to take a 3-0 lead.

IVC's No. 1 team of freshmen Nick Grove and Luciano Pardo won, 8-2, the No. 2 duo of freshmen Lucas Diaz and Lucas Torres came out on top, 8-6, and the No. 3 team of sophomore Alyan Ashraf and freshman Patrick Riggs won, 8-1.

In singles, one match went to three sets with Pardo beating Bakersfield's Brett Yackovich, 7-6 (3), 2-6, (10-8) on the second court.

Grove at No. 1 singles, freshman Sufyan Ashraf at No. 3, Diaz on the fourth court, Torres at No. 5 and A Ashraf at No. 6 all had easy wins.

Sufyan Ashraf dropped just two games, Diaz won, 6-0, 6-1, Diaz earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory and Alyan Ashraf won, 6-0, 6-0.

Irvine Valley plays again on Tuesday, hosting Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conferencee match at 2 p.m.
