Three men's doubles teams, Ishida in singles move on at state

Irvine Valley's men's tennis team had a solid Thursday on the first day of competition at the California Community College State Championships in the Ventura and Ojai areas.

The Lasers had all three of their doubles teams move on to the round of 16 and one singles player also advance with another just missing out.

Singles started Thursday morning with 64 players from around the state competing. IVC had sophomores Kiichi Ishida and Devon Kashishian each win opening round matches.

Ishida defeated Edauardo Castillo of San Diego City, 6-1, 6-1, and Kashishian took down Ruben Hernandez of Modesto, 6-0, 6-0.

Ishida then cruised in his round of 32 match after, beating Carlos Rullan of Riverside, 6-0, 6-0.

But Kashishian had to go three, tough sets in his contest and came up short to Darian Quinonez from Chabot, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

Ishida moved on to face Zino Mirtorabi of Foothill in the round of 16 on Friday morning.

In doubles, the teams of Ishida and Kashishian, freshman Alyan Ashraf and sophomore Harold Santana and freshmen Rudra Pathak and Sergio Jardas each won their lone match in straight sets on Thursday to advance to the round of 32 Friday.

Kashishian and Ishida didn't drop a game in a sweep, Pathak and Jardas only lost two games in their victory and Ashraf and Santana won, 6-2, 6-2.

Ishida won the state doubles title last year with teammate Arther Bellegy.
