Men's tennis team is back on the courts, beats Orange Coast

The Irvine Valley men's tennis team's 2021 season got off to a later start than expected, but the Lasers made the most of their first mach of the year.

Irvine Valley beat Orange Coast, 7-2, in an Orange Empire Conference match at home on Tuesday.

IVC was slated to open Tuesday, Apr. 13 at Fullerton, but that match and the next one scheduled vs. Fullerton at home on Apr. 15 were cancelled due to health and safety protocols.

The Lasers then had a bye in the OEC schedule last week because Cypress doesn't have a men's team.

But Irvine Valley looked good on Tuesday against OCC.

The Lasers had to default matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles because they only had five available players.

The five, however, did their job and then some.

IVC dropped just nine games on the day.

To start in doubles, freshmen Julio Vargas and Luis Moros won, 8-0, at the No. 1 spot and freshmen Victor Chaix and Hugo Redelinger came out on top, 8-1, at the No. 2 position.

In singles, all five IVC players won in straight sets with none dropping more than three games.

Vargas (6-1, 6-0), Moros (6-2, 6-1), Chaix (6-0, 6-0), Redelinger (6-0, 6-2) and freshman Cole Martin (6-0, 6-1) earned the overall victory for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday at Orange Coast at 2 p.m.
