Alumni Report: Boise State tennis honors Wyatt DeMulling

Former Irvine Valley standout men's tennis player Wyatt DeMulling was off to a solid start for Boise State in what was to be his senior season this spring.

The campaign was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. Boise State had a 7-6 overall record.

DeMulling, who was a big part of the best Irvine Valley tennis team in history in 2017, was fighting hard, being a leader and playing well on the court for the Broncos.

DeMulling finished the year with the second-best record in singles overall for Boise State at 17-8.

The senior, from Seattle, Wash., went 8-5 in the fall, then followed that up with a 9-3 mark during spring duals, while splitting time between the second, third and fourth positions in the Bronco lineup.

DeMulling was named all-Mountain West Conference in singles for the season.

He also received The Bleed Blue Award by the Boise State tennis program for the student-athlete who best exemplifies the program's culture and mentality, including the traits below:

  • The recipient understands the value of being part of something larger than himself. It is no longer about being an individual, it is about being a team.
  • Each athlete checks their ego at the door and understands their role and purpose.
  • We understand the privilege and honor it is to be a Bronco, something we cherish at all times.
  • Each member of our program will represent our university with high character and make sound decisions in everyday life and show gratitude towards the opportunities they have been given.
  • Winning or losing, we roll up our sleeves and go to work.
  • Bleeding Blue is not for everyone, it is for the elite who are willing to put others before themselves to achieve greatness and be champions on and off the court.

Head Coach Kristian Widen said on the Boise State website about DeMulling:

"Wyatt is a true Bronco, inside and out. He won this award last year as well, and has helped turn this program around. He is not the loudest team member in the locker room, but with his way of showing up everyday, he is a silent leader that his teammates can rely on for support and energy. In competition, his positive energy makes him the heart and soul of this team. Wyatt is a great teammate and he will do anything for his team, our program and Boise State University. He understands that nobody is larger than the program and he is one of the most loyal student-athletes I have ever been around".

In his lone season at Irvine Valley in 2017, DeMulling was a star.

IVC went undefeated with a record of 19-0, captured its third straight California Community College Athletic Association State Championship title under head coach Ross Duncan and had players win singles and doubles state titles.

DeMulling was named an All-American in singles and DeMulling and partner Chris Politiek earned All-American honors in doubles.

DeMulling made the quarterfinals at the state tournament in singles. His teammate Javier Callejo won his second-straight CCCAA singles title.

DeMulling and Politiek reached the quarterfinals of the event in doubles. The duo went undefeated during the regular season and was named the co-Orange Empire Conference doubles team of the year.

Irvine Valley was also once again ranked No. 1 in the state in The Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association California Community College Athletic Association final rankings for 2017.

DeMulling was part of a program that won 35 straight matches through the 2017 season.
