Men's tennis team wraps up season with solid results at Ojai

Irvine Valley's men's and women's tennis players competed at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships last week at the Ojai Tournament and turned in some solid results.

Men's player Leszek Mirecki was also named a sophomore player of the year and Ross Duncan was selected coach of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The IVC team of freshmen Derek Lin and Parker McBride reached the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.

McBride and Lin were seeded ninth and won three matches.

The duo defeated fourth-seeded Roger Wen and Keegan Yap of Chabot, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7, in the round of 16 before falling to the top-seeded team and eventual champion Kalman Boyd and Alex Kuperstein of College of the Desert, 6-1, 6-2.

McBride also competed in singles. He was seeded 12th and won two matches. McBride made it to the round of 16 before losing to Kuperstein, 6-4, 6-1.

Irvine Valley's team of freshman Julian Lafond and Mirecki won two matches. Lafond and Mirecki were a second seed. The duo fell to Jindrich Kosatik and Sergio Lee Gutierrez of Fullerton, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.

Lafond and Mirecki each reached the quarterfinals in singles.

Mirecki, who was a sixth seed, captured three wins, including beating Younes Kodiji of , 6-4, 6-4. He fell to third-seeded Arthur Toledo of Cerritos, 6-4, 6-4 in the quarters.

Lafond, who was seeded ninth, also won three matches. He fell to eventual champion Boyd of COD in the quarters.

The Irvine Valley team of freshman Mateo Maya and sophomore Thallys Santos won a match before getting knocked out in the round of 32. And freshman Rodrigo Souza and sophomore Ardi Safi each won a match in singles before losing in the round of 32.

Irvine Valley had a strong year overall, winning the Orange Empire Conference title and making the semifinals of the dual team playoffs. The Lasers ended with a record of 12-2 overall and were 8-0 in conference.
