Men's tennis team breezes by Ventura in regional playoff opener

Irvine Valley's men's tennis team is back winning matches in the playoffs.

The Lasers, seeded second, beat Ventura, 5-0, in the first round of the Southern California Regional Dual Team Playoffs.

Irvine Valley won three California Community College State Championships in a row, but had a down season in 2018 and was knocked out of the postseason in the opening round.

The Lasers will go after another playoff win next Tuesday when they host the team that knocked it out last year, College of the Desert, in the semifinals. COD is seeded third.

Irvine Valley made quick work of Ventura on Tuesday, claiming all three doubles points and then winning two singles matches to end things.

IVC got easy wins in doubles from its teams of sophomore Leszek Mirecki and freshman Julian Lafond at the No. 1 position, sophomore Thallys Santos and freshman Parker McBride on the second court and sophomore Ardi Safi and freshman Rodrigo Souza at the No. 3 spot.

Safi and Souza won, 8-0.

In singles, Lafond defeated Alex Campolina, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 3 position and freshman Jorge Villagra beat Jacob Boucher, 6-0, 6-0, on the sixth court.

Irvine Valley also held leads on all of the other courts.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 12-1 overall.

It was the team's 12th straight victory. IVC's only defeat of the season came in the season opener, a 5-4 defeat to No. 1 Cerritos at home on Feb. 12.
