Men's tennis team stays in third place in standings with win at OCC

Irvine Valley's men's tennis team picked up an important Orange Empire Conference win on Thursday with a victory over Orange Coast on the road.

Orange Coast went into the match ranked No. 4 in the last Oracle/ITA NJCAA Men's Regional Rankings for Southern California.

IVC wasn't ranked.

The Lasers won two of three doubles matches and then captured four of six singles contests. IVC showed the depth of its lineup in singles.

Irvine Valley lost at the first singles position, but won at the No. 2 spot with freshman Thallys Santos, No. 3 with William Li, No. 5 with Stuart Webb and No. 6 spot with Alvaro Mantilla.

Each of those players won in straight sets.

Webb was impressive in beating Charlie Vanderwey, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, the IVC No. 1 team of Santos and freshman Jacob Holiday beat Ho Kiu Tam and Chris Hasrouni, 8-3.

Irvine Valley also got a victory from the duo of Manilla and Li over Olsen and Nikith Garikaparthi, 8-4, at the third spot.

The Lasers improved their record to 4-7 overall and 4-2 in conference. It was IVC's second win over Orange Coast this season and kept it in third place in the conference standings.

Irvine Valley will finish its match with Saddleback next Tuesday at home. The match was stopped in progress on Tuesday because of rain. IVC had won the first two doubles matches.
