Men's tennis team ranked No. 1 in So. Cal. going into 2017 season

Irvine Valley's men's tennis team, which has won two straight CCCAA State Championships, sits at the top of the initial Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern California Men's Rankings for the 2017 season.

The poll was released last week.

The Lasers are one of five Orange Empire Conference teams in the top 10 in So. Cal.

Cypress was ranked third, Saddleback was sixth, Riverside was seventh and Orange Coast came in 10th.

Cerritos was the No. 2-ranked team behind Irvine Valley.

The Lasers, guided by head coach Ross Duncan, finished last season with a record of 21-2 overall with the only two losses coming to four-year schools.

IVC also won both the singles and doubles state titles and won the overall trophy at Ojai for the most wins by a team.

Freshman Javier won the state singles title and the sophomore pair of Scott Paz and Bruno Figlia captured the doubles crown.

Irvine Valley also captured its third conference title in a row last season.

The Lasers will start the 2017 season on Jan. 31, 2017 with a scrimmage match at Point Loma.

IVC hosts Hope International on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. and will take on Cerritos on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.

Duncan will also be the head coach of the women's team this coming season at Irvine Valley.
