Men's tennis player Bruno Figlia signs with Hawaii Hilo

Irvine Valley state champion men's tennis player Bruno Figlia has signed with the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Figlia was a part of two straight California Community College Athletics Association state team titles at Irvine Valley. He also won the state doubles title with partner and fellow sophomore Scott Paz this past season.

Figlia, from Ivony De Camargo Salles in Itatiba, Brazil, starred for coach Ross Duncan for two years at Irvine Valley.

He helped Irvine Valley have a record of 38-5 over the past two years.

With help from Figlia, Irvine Valley beat Foothill College, 5-2, for its first state title in 2014 at the Pierpoint Club in Ventura. The team had a record of 18-1 overall.

Then this past year, Irvine Valley defeated American River, 5-1, for another state crown.

Figlia won in doubles and then captured the deciding match in singles, taking down Dylan King, 6-1, 6-0, on the fifth court to give IVC the overall win.

The doubles state final was an all-Irvine Valley affair with the fourth-seeded team of Figlia and Paz outlasting teammates and the top-seeded team of Sam Cohen and Javier Callejo, 5-7, 6-4; 10-4 in the super tiebreaker.

It was the second straight year that Irvine Valley teams met each other in the state doubles final.

Figlia and Paz capped two-year Irvine Valley careers that saw them help Irvine Valley go 20-0 in the Orange Empire Conference, win two conference team titles, capture two team state titles as well as claim the doubles state championship.

Figlia has a record of 17-1 in doubles and 12-0 in singles this past season for Irvine Valley.

He went 15-1 as a freshman in singles for Irvine Valley in 2015.

Figlia is headed to a Hawaii Hilo team that had a record of 6-11 overall last season.
