Men's tennis team sweeps Cypress in OEC opening match

Irvine Valley's men's tennis team breezed by Cypress in its first Orange Empire Conference match of the season on Tuesday.

Irvine Valley, which is the three-time defending conference champion, beat Cypress, 9-0, on the road.

The Lasers, ranked No. 1 in Southern California, lost just five games in nine total matches on the day.

IVC's doubles teams of sophomore Tony Selim and freshman Gavin Lynch and freshmen Rafael Lourenco and Jack Fryer each won their matches, 8-0.

Irvine Valley's top doubles team of sophomore Sam Cohen and freshman Javier Callejo won, 8-1.

In singles, freshman Octave Bellet (No. 3), sophomore Bruno Figlia (No. 4), sophomore Scott Paz (No. 5) and Lynch (No. 6) each won, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, Cohen won, 6-1, 6-2, over Cypress' Connor Jenkins and Callejo came out on top, 6-1, 6-0, over Boo Tran at No. 2 singles.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 6-2 overall. The team's only two defeats were to four-year schools San Diego Christian and Point Loma Nazarene.

Cypress' record fell to 0-6 overall.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday, hosting Fullerton at 2 p.m.
