IVC spring state champions honored by SOCCCD board

Irvine Valley's record-setting state championship teams and student-athletes from the spring of 2015 were honored by the South Orange County Community College Board of Trustees at their monthly meeting on Monday in Mission Viejo.

Irvine Valley had two teams win state titles - men's tennis and women's sand volleyball - and four individual state winners - men's doubles team of Valentine Baize and Max Rumeau and the sand volleyball pair teams of Marisa Doran and Kobi Pekich, Annie Mitchem and Emily Reinking and Samantha Holdredge and Hailee Earnest - honored by the board in presentations on Monday night.

Irvine Valley President Glenn Roquemore, women's sand volleyball coach Tom Pestolesi, men's tennis coach Ross Duncan, IVC Dean and Athletic Director Keith Shackleford as well as honored student athletes attended the event.

Baize, Octave Ballet, Luis Castillo, Austin Do, Bruno Figlia, Stan Gavoty, Simon Guillin, Scott Paz, Flavien Raveau, Rumeau, Tony Selim, Robert Sielmann, Guillermo Ucelay and Carson Williams and coaches Ross Duncan and Amber Vann made up the men's tennis team that finished the 2015 season with a record of 18-1 and the program's first ever state title. The team also went 10-0 in the Orange Empire Conference to take that title for the second straight year.

Reinking, Holdredge, Hannah Matt, Earnest, Kayla Scheevel, Juju Cannon, Shaelyn Perez, Mitchem, Pekich, Sarah Allen-Baines, Makani Wall, Taylor Askins, Rachael Woods, Samantha Goodman, Doran, Carleigh Petersen and Hailey Jones and coaches Tom Pestolesi, Butch May and Mike Cram made up the women's sand volleyball team that won the inaugural CCCAA state title this past spring at Irvine Valley.

It was a record-setting 2014-15 year for the Lasers, who won three state team titles (also women's indoor volleyball) and five state individual titles (also women's golf individual winner Leleaga Meredith). The Laser indoor volleyball team and Meredith were honored by the SOCCD after winning state titles last fall.

Thanks in great part to the state titles, Irvine Valley finished 12th in the NATYCAA Cup for 2014-15, which was its highest ever placing.

The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), in association with the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA), released the final CCCAA standings of the 2014-15 NATYCAA Cup last June.

The Lasers placed 12th with a total of 107 points.

IVC was the highest non-football playing school on the list.
