Men's tennis player Guillermo Ucelay named All-American

Irvine Valley freshman singles player Guillermo Ucelay was recently selected to the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Team for JUCO men's tennis.

He is the first ever All-American for Irvine Valley men's tennis.

A player must finish in the top 10 in singles of the final ITA college tennis rankings or in the top five in doubles of the final ITA rankings.

There were 15 players selected to the CAJUCO All-American team.

They included Lovedeep Singh and Adam Duong from American River, Nathan Eshmade and Amadi Kagoma of Cerritos, Pedro Carle and Zach Lidster of College of the Desert, Matt Alves, Scott Gray and Jakov Tshirkin of Fresno City, Gustavo Castro of Grossmont, Ucelay, Richard Catabona of LA Pierce, Vitor Galvao and Bruno Campos of Mt. San Jacinto and Vitor Mendes of Ventura.

Ucelay was selected for singles.

He helped lead Irvine Valley to its best season ever. The Lasers won their first Orange Empire Conference title, reached the post-season for the first time and ended up taking second at the State Championships.

IVC lost in the finals, 5-2, to defending state champ Fresno City.

Irvine Valley finished the year with an overall record of 17-3.

Ucelay had a record of 19-3 in singles on the season, playing at the No. 1 position for the Lasers. And one of those losses was a match he didn't even compete in, taking a default in the Orange Empire Conference tourney.

All 19 of his wins came in straight sets. He defeated Alves of Fresno City, 6-3, 6-0, in the state team match.

Ucelay was also 18-5 in doubles this season.

He was named the Orange Empire Conference player of the year and reached the quarterfinals of both the singles and doubles draws at the State Championships in Ojai.
