Men's soccer player Sergio Montes on his way to Westcliff

Irvine Valley two-year starting men's soccer player Sergio Montes signed with Westcliff University recently.

Montes, a star defender for the Lasers, joins teammate Daniel Segal, who also has signed with Westcliff.

This past season, Montes started 19 of 20 matches for the Lasers and helped the defense record six shutouts on the year.

And In Irvine Valley's push to make it into the postseason late in the year, the defensive unit, led by Montes, gave up just 11 goals in nine contests.

He also scored one goal on the year for Irvine Valley.

Montes, a former Capistrano Valley High player, helped IVC reach the CCCAA South Regional Playoffs and end the 2018 season with a record of 8-10-3 overall.

He was also part of the 2017 squad that went 12-5-5 overall, made the playoffs and reached the second round before losing in penalty kicks at Mt. SAC.

Montes is headed to a Westcliff squad that will be in its first year as a program in 2019. The Warriors are scheduled to compete independently next season.

Montes and Segal will play for new coach Joey O'Keefe.
