Men's soccer team shuts out Norco in regular season finale

The Irvine Valley men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season an clinched second place in the Orange Empire Conference with a 3-0 win over Norco at home on Tuesday.

The Lasers, ranked 13th in the state, improved their record to 11-5-4 overall and 9-2-3 in conference.

Golden West won the OEC title outright on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Orange Coast.

Irvine Valley lost to Golden West, 6-1, last Friday on the road in a battle for first place in the conference.

But the Lasers bounced back big time on Tuesday at home against Norco.

Irvine Valley scored two goals in the first 18 minutes of play and never looked back.

The scoring started with a goal by freshman defender Juan Sebastian Olivares. He took a pass from freshman forward Eder Olivas and scored from near the top of the box.

Olivares scored his sixth goal of the year and Olivas picked up his team-leading eighth assist.

A few minutes later, Irvine Valley made it a 2-0 game. Sophomore defender Andrew Jimenez took a shot from 25 yards away that bounced off the keeper and right to sophomore forward Toby Waterman, who knocked it home.

It was Waterman's seventh goal of the season.

Irvine Valley, despite being down to 10 players after a red card in the 32nd minute, dominated much of the action in the contest.

And the Lasers put the match away for good in the 70th minute on a goal by freshman midfielder Grant Joyce.

Waterman took the ball down the right side, beat two defenders and then crossed the ball to Joyce, who finished with his left foot to make it 3-0. It was Joyce's second goal of the season.

Irvine Valley freshman goalie Braden Peters earned the shutout. It was his ninth win of the season and third shutout of the year.

The Lasers now await the announcement of the Southern California Regional Playoff pairings early next week.
