Men's team ranked No. 16 in United Soccer Coaches National Poll

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team was back in the state rankings this week, coming in at No. 13 in the California Community College Men's Soccer Coaches Association State Poll.

Well, the Lasers are also in the national spotlight.

Irvine Valley is ranked No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division III National Poll.

It is IVC's first appearance in the national poll since being No. 14 in the preseason rankings. The Lasers came in at 10th in the final national poll of the 2016 season.

The 2017 Lasers are riding a five-match win streak and were neck-and-neck with Golden West for first place in the Orange Empire Conference standings heading into this week.

IVC has a record of 8-4-3 overall and 6-1-2 in conference. Freshman forward Eder Olivas ranks tied for third in the conference in goals with seven, is tied for first in assists with eight and is third in points with 22. Freshman defender Juan Sebastian Olivares and sophomore forward Toby Waterman are tied for eighth in the OEC with five goals each and freshman keeper Braden Peters is second in goals against per match at 1.23

Irvine Valley's scheduled conference match on Tuesday at Orange Coast was postponed because of unfavorable field temperatures on OCC's turf field.

The game has been moved back to Wednesday night in LeBard Stadium at Orange Coast at 7 p.m. when conditions should be better.

In the national poll, Irvine Valley is one of 11 teams from California ranked in the 17-team poll.

Cerritos is No. 1, City College of San Francisco is No. 4, Mt. SAC is at No. 6, Santa Barbara City is ranked No. 7, Fresno City is at No. 8, West Valley is No. 9, Hartnell is No. 10, Taft is at No. 13, Rio Hondo is ranked No. 15, IVC is at No. 16 and Las Positas comes in at No. 17.

After Wednesday night's match at Orange Coast, the Lasers host Santa Ana in a big conference contest on Friday at 3 p.m.
