Men's soccer team falls to El Camino, OEC play starts Tuesday

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team played well, had more chances, but couldn't score in a 2-0 loss at El Camino on Friday.

Irvine Valley (1-2-1) out-shot El Camino by a wide margin on Friday, but had tough luck with scoring goals.

The Lasers had their chances but could not secure a goal in the match. IVC out-shot El Camino, 20-10, in the contest.

In the 26th minute, the Warriors turned the ball over in their own box and sophomore forward Toby Waterman beat Cesar Amezcua with a shot to the far post.

But El Camino defender Stephen Vincent was able to recover to the goal line and knock the ball away to save a goal and keep the match scoreless in the first half.

In the 83rd minute, IVC had another golden opportunity when it was awarded a penalty kick.

Amezcua guessed right, but Waterman went the other way and had an empty net to work with. But his shot went wide of the right post and the game remained scoreless. The Lasers didn't not have another scoring chance in the match.

America recorded his first clean sheet of the season and El Camino improved its record to 2-2-1 overall.

Jason Santana scored both goals for El Camino. He got the Warriors started in the 55th minute with a blast past Laser freshman goalkeeper Braden Peters.

The forward took a pass from Cristian Guevara inside the box on the far side.

Santana beat his defender and then fired a left-footed strike past Peters to the far side and into the back of the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Santana then found the back of the net in the 59th minute.

Reyes Jaimes set up the goal, using a back-heel pass to find Santana, who hit a shot past the keeper from 20 yards out to put the Warriors up 2-0.

Irvine Valley starts Orange Empire Conference action on Tuesday, traveling to Santiago Canyon for a 2 p.m. match.
