The Irvine Valley men's soccer team continued to roll through Orange Empire Conference opponents at home.
After beating Santiago Canyon, 6-1, at home in its conference opener last week, the Lasers got a big-time performance from sophomore forward Sean Goode and shut out Cypress, 5-0, at IVC on Friday.
Irvine Valley, ranked 15th in the state, improved its record to 7-2-0 overall. The Lasers also stayed in first place by themselves in the OEC with a record of 3-0-0. Irvine Valley has out-scored conference opponents, 14-2, through three matches.
Goode scored a career-high four goals for the Lasers to lead the way on Friday. His four goals gave him seven on the year, which ties sophomore forward Connor Elder for the team lead and also ties him at the top of the conference.
Goode scored IVC's first four goals of the match.
He turned and fired in the 38th minute from the top of the box and beat Cypress goalie Braydon Welch with a shot to put IVC in front.
Irvine Valley took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
For the second straight home match, IVC turned up its play in the second half.
Sophomore forward Jose Rivera played a ball forward to Goode, who found the back of the net in the 49th minute for a 2-0 lead.
Then six minutes later, Goode scored again. He tipped in a shot off a pass from freshman defender Peyton Stade.
IVC went up, 4-0, on Goode's final goal of the day in the 59th minute. He beat Welch with a shot off a pass from sophomore midfielder Joseph Ferguson.
"He has always been a dangerous player," Irvine Valley coach Martin McGrogan said of Goode, who led the Lasers in goals in 2014. "He is capable of that type of play every time out. He's a great athlete, strong on the ball, quick and brave up front. It was a wonderful performance by him today."
Freshman midfielder Mitchell Findlay-McKenzie closed out Irvine Valley's scoring in the 68th minute off another assist from Stade.
Irvine Valley has now out-scored its two conference opponents at home in the second half, 9-0.
Freshman goalie Blake Sigler made four saves in goal for IVC to earn the shutout.
The Lasers play again on Tuesday, hosting Orange Coast in a conference match at 3 p.m.
