Men's soccer team ranked eighth in the state in first poll

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team was ranked eighth in the first California Community Colleges Soccer Coaches Association poll of the season, which was released on Monday.

Irvine Valley (3-1-0) is coming off of a third-place finish in the Hartnell College Tournament over the weekend.

The Lasers beat Las Positas, 2-1, on Sunday to take third.

The top 10 teams in the rankings are Fresno City, Oxnard, Mt. SAC, Santa Rosa, Taft, Hartnell, Fullerton, Irvine Valley and Feather River.

Three Orange Empire Conference teams are ranked with Fullerton at No. 7, Irvine Valley at No. 8 and Santa Ana at No. 12.

Irvine Valley was also ranked 16th in the nation in the first NSCAA Junior College Division III poll that was released on Tuesday.

IVC is the eighth of 10 teams from California ranked in that top-20 poll.

Fresno City was second, Oxnard was fourth, Mt. SAC was sixth, Santa Rosa was eighth, Fullerton was 14th and Irvine Valley was 16th.

Nassau Community College from New York was ranked first.

Irvine Valley, which won an Orange Empire Conference title and made the So. Cal. Regional Finals a year ago, finished the 2015 season ranked No. 5 in the state and No. 9 in the nation.

Irvine Valley takes on Moorpark at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at home in its next match.
