Irvine Valley's men's soccer team needed to hold on for one more minute.

Santiago Canyon earned and converted a penalty kick in the third and final minute of extra time of the match and the Lasers and the Hawks tied, 1-1, in an Orange Empire Conference contest on Friday at IVC.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 10 in the state, took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on one of the best goals of the season for the team.

Freshman midfielder Albert Chavez ran onto a loose ball after a short clearance from Santiago Canyon and rocketed a one-time shot that found its way under the crossbar and in from nearly 30 yards out.

It was one of a few good chances for IVC in the first half.

Freshman forward Sebastian Piema, freshman forward Toby Waterman and freshman midfielder Jose Gamboa all created opportunities.

Irvine Valley tried to increase its lead 15 minutes into the second half. Waterman was taken down in the box, but Santiago Canyon keeper Ulises Serafin guessed correctly, diving to his right to save Waterman's penalty attempt.

Irvine Valley sophomore goalie Manuel Zamora kept Irvine Valley ahead in the 69th minute with his own save on a penalty kick. After a hand ball was called on the Lasers in the box, Brian Chavez stepped up to the spot, but his shot was saved by Zamora, who dove to his left to knock the ball away.

It was a furious 10-plus minutes to finish the match.

Santiago Canyon's Daley Turner clipped the crossbar and the ball went over in the 80th minute.

Irvine Valley reimained ahead until in the final seconds.

In the third minute of extra time, Kyle Pizano earned a foul in the box for Santiago Canyon. He buried his penalty in the upper left corner to tie the score and that is the way the game ended.

The referee blew the whistle after Pizano finished his kick.

Zamora made seven saves for IVC in goal and Serafin had four saves for the Hawks.

The draw was the first blemish on Irvine Valley's record so far in conference. The Lasers, who led the standings by themselves heading into the match, saw their record move to 6-2-3 overall and 3-0-1 in conference. They are now tied for first place with Santa Ana, which downed Orange Coast, 4-0, on Friday.

Santiago Canyon came in tied for third in the OEC and had its record go to 4-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference. The Hawks remained tied for third place.

Irvine Valley has two home matches next week. The team hosts Golden West on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and then hosts Santa Ana on Friday at 3 p.m.
