Men's soccer team rolls at Norco in conference opener

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team got its Orange Empire Conference campaign off to a strong start.

The Lasers went on the road and defeated Norco, 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory snapped a two-match losing streak for the Lasers, who had dropped games to the top-two ranked teams in the state (Hartnell and Rio Hondo).

The Lasers improved their record to 4-2-2 overall.

Irvine Valley, ranked 15th in the state in the latest poll, got two goals from freshman forward Connor Elder and a goal each from freshman forward Toby Waterman and freshman midfielder Kendrick Nguyen each added goals.

Waterman's goal was his team-leading sixth of the season. And Elder improved his goal count to five.

Irvine Valley scored three of the goals in the first half.

Elder connected first.

He scored in the 30th minute off an assist from freshman forward Joseph Ferguson.

Waterman gave Irvine Valley a 2-0 lead five minutes later when he converted a penalty kick.

And in the 39th minute, Nguyen scored put IVC up, 3-0. Sophomore midfielder Jose Gamboa picked up the assist.

Irvine Valley closed out its scoring 10 minutes into the second half.

Elder finished after IVC had a free kick.

Freshman keeper Hagen Truniger recorded the shutout with five saves.

It was Irvine Valley's second shutout of the season.

The Lasers play again on Friday, hosting Fullerton in another conference match at 3 p.m. Fullerton tied Santa Ana, 1-1, in its conference opener on Tuesday.
