Men's soccer team plays to scoreless draw with Santiago Canyon

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team is now unbeaten in its last five matches.

The Lasers put together another solid Orange Empire Conference performance in a 0-0 tie with Santiago Canyon at home on Friday.

Irvine Valley has three wins and two ties in its last five matches.

Irvine Valley ran its record to 6-8-5 overall and 5-5-2 in conference with the draw.

Santiago Canyon, which was ranked No. 8 in Southern California in the latest poll, saw its record move to 11-4-3 overall and 7-3-2 in conference. The Hawks remained in second place in the conference standings with 23 points after Friday's tie.

Irvine Valley moved into fifth place by itself in the standings with the one point for the tie. It now has 17 points.

IVC had been tied with Orange Coast for fifth, but the Pirates fell to conference-leading Golden West, 1-0, on Friday.

Irvine Valley couldn't a goal to pick up even more points on Friday.

Play picked up late in the match after a first half where each team took just one shot.

The Lasers had several good opportunities, including a header in the 77th minute by sophomore defender Riccardo Antonelli that just went wide, a strong high shot by freshman midfielder Guillermo Madrigal in the 78th minute that Santiago Canyon goalie Christopher Martinez knocked over the crossbar with a leaping save and a shot by sophomore midfielder Fayiz Darwish that went wide after he dribbled two defenders in the 82nd minute.

Santiago Canyon's best chances also came late. Carlos Moreno hit a one-time shot wide in the 81st minute, Michael Bryant headed a shot over the top of the goal from close range in the 85th minute and Hugo Cobian had his shot stopped by IVC freshman keeper Elias Licea with a diving save in the 90th minute.

Both Martinez and Licea each ended up with three saves in goal.

Irvine Valley plays again next Monday (due to the Tuesday Veteran's day holiday) at Golden West at 1 p.m.
