Irvine Valley's men's soccer team scored its most goals in a match this season, beating Santiago Canyon, 4-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match Tuesday afternoon on the road.
Three of those goals came off the foot of freshman forward Sean Goode, who had two in the first half and capped the Lasers' scoring in the second half.
Irvine Valley needed the goals and the win after dropping two straight contests in conference.
The Lasers improved their record to 3-6-3 overall and 2-3-0 in conference.
With the win, IVC moved closer to the pack in the conference standings. With six points now, Irvine Valley is just three points out of third place.
"All the boys worked really hard," IVC coach Martin McGrogan said. "We showed the type of team that we can be."
One of the hardest workers early on in the match for the Lasers was freshman forward Keyhan Kaveh.
He created Irvine Valley's first goal by putting lots of pressure on the Santiago Canyon defense.
Kaveh was able to take the ball from a defender and then pushed it past the Hawk goalie Christopher Martinez to give IVC the lead in the 18th minute.
Santiago Canyon tied the game in the 35th minute in a goal by Carlos Moreno.
But Goode found the back of the net twice within a six-minute span at the end of the half to give IVC the lead for good.
He dribbled around Martinez for the second goal, which gave Irvine Valley a 3-1 lead just before halftime.
Goode recorded his hat trick later in the second half by finishing a shot over the head of Martinez.
"That third goal was the best of the bunch," McGrogan said. "He showed great skill with that one. Sean took all of his goals well."
Goode's goals gave him a team-high six on the season. He also leads the team with 14 points (six goals and two assists).
IVC also got a solid performance from freshman Jeremy Parsons, who was making his first start in goal on the year.
Parsons saved a penalty kick in the second half to keep Irvine Valley ahead by two goals.
"That stopped a lot of momentum," McGrogan said. "It was a big save and we were all really happy for him."
Parsons finished with five saves in the contest.
Irvine Valley is back in action on Friday when it hosts conference-leading Golden West at 3 p.m.
