Men's soccer team holds on for win against Moorpark

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team scored its most goals in a match so far this season to defeat Moorpark, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon at home.

The Lasers scored the first three goals of the contest and then held on for the victory, which was the team's first of the season.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 1-2-2, while Moorpark took its first loss and saw its record fall to 0-1-2.

IVC scored two goals within a three minute stretch in the first half to jump out to the lead.

Freshman defender Tony Scimeca headed the ball in after it knocked around a few times in the box after a corner kick by freshman midfielder Ezequiel Villegas in the 18th minute.

Soon after, freshman forward Sean Goode made it 2-0 for the Lasers. He brought down a long pass from freshman defender Greg Molina into the box and then beat a defender and then Moorpark goalie Luis Monroy with a shot near post.

Moorpark had a chance to get on the board in the opening minutes of the second half, but Sargon Barkawi's penalty kick sailed over the top of the goal.

The Lasers had a couple of strong chances after that. Freshman midfielder Fernando Arroyo sent a line-drive shot that Monroy made a good save on. And then freshman midfielder Guillermo Madrigal hit the crossbar with a shot.

The Lasers found the back of the net in the 60th minute. Freshman forward Alexis Plata put the ball in the lower left corner of the goal after nice work and passes by Madrigal and Arroyo.

But IVC had to hold for the victory.

Moorpark came charging back and made it a game late. Jorge Mendoza scored off a cross by Larry Morejon in the 70th minute to make it a 3-1 game and then Kriko Tashejian score in the 89th minute off a pass by Barkawi.

Irvine Valley was able to run out the clock for the win.

IVC freshman keeper Elias Licea made three saves in goal to pick up the victory.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday when it hosts defending state champion Hartnell at 1 p.m.
