Irvine Valley's men's soccer team salvaged a 2-2 tie with Glendale after scoring late into extra time in its 2014 opener on Wednesday at Irvine Valley.
Glendale took a 2-1 lead in the 93rd minute (three minutes into extra time). Jose Luis Perez-Badillo hit a shot that IVC freshman keeper Elias Licea was able to get a hand on and knock down, but Satsuki Ito was there to tap the ball into the net to put Glendale ahead.
Irvine Valley answered just a minute later when freshman forward Alan Anaya scored his second goal of the game off a pass from freshman forward Alex Plata.
The final whistle blew shortly after.
"It was disappointing to be down, 2-1, but we were able to come right back," IVC coach Martin McGrogan said. "It could have ended worse for us. I thought for a lot of the time in the match, we played good football. There were positives and also some things that we need to improve on."
Anaya, who came into the game late in the second half, also tied the score at 1-1 in the 79th minute.
After making a nice run, he took a pass from freshman forward Sean Goode and scored.
Glendale got on the board first, getting a goal from Max Trautmann off a cross from Ito in the 49th minute.
"We made a couple of bad mistakes in the back to allow their goals," McGrogan said. "Hopefully we continue to get better."
Goode, freshman midfielder Ezequiel Villegas and Plata all created solid chances for the Lasers.
Goode in particular nearly came away with a couple of goals. He had a shot early in the match that sailed just left of his target. In the second half, he sent a left-footed shot that hit off the crossbar and was also just one dribble away from beating Glendale keeper Julian Ortega on a one-on-one opportunity.
"Sean is going to score some goals for us," McGrogan said. "He is a very strong player up front. I liked what Alan came in and provided for us as well. He was able to find the back of the net."
Licea made five saves in goal for Irvine Valley in the contest.
Irvine Valley now travels to the Hartnell Tournament this weekend. The Lasers open action on Friday against the City College of San Francisco at 11 a.m.
