Men's soccer team wins at Cypress

After a number of close calls, narrow losses and frustrating ties, the Irvine Valley men's soccer team earned its first win of the season Tuesday afternoon.

The Lasers defeated Cypress, 4-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match at Cypress.

Irvine Valley had opened the season with eight ties in its first 13 matches, including ones against state ranked teams Fresno City,  Rio Hondo, Hartnell, Fullerton and Santiago Canyon.

Irvine Valley made it a no doubt victory on Tuesday.

The Lasers scored their most goals of the season in the match.

IVC got on the board early on.

After a foul in the box, sophomore midfielder Daniel Totays converted the penalty kick to give IVC a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Alejandro Velazquez made it a 2-0 game for the Lasers five minutes before halftime.

He scored off an assist from freshman Gonzalo Verduzco.

Verduzco scored a goal of his own early in the second half. He was there to knock in a rebound off the crossbar.

Cypress pulled to within 3-1 with a goal midway through the second half.

But the Lasers put the game away for good with a final goal.

Sophomore Abraham Montano scored off an assist from sophomore Omid Kazemi.

Freshman goalie Bryce Williamson earned the win in goal. He made four saves.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 1-5-8 overall and 1-3-3 in conference.

Cypress fell to 3-8-3 overall and 1-5-1 in conference.

The match was the final one of the first round of conference play.

Irvine Valley opens up the second round of conference on Friday by hosting Norco at 3 p.m.​
