Men's golf team wraps up season at conference championships

Irvine Valley's men's golf team placed seventh in the opening round of the Orange Empire Conference Championships and took eighth in the second round at Los Serranos in Chino Hills on Monday.

The Lasers finished the year in eighth place with a record of 14-56.

Irvine Valley Coach Ben Burnett said this season's conference action was as competitive as he's ever seen and that the talent in the conference was better than ever.

Cypress posted the lowest team score on the North Course and Santiago Canyon College posted the lowest team score on the par-74 South Course, but neither team could catch Orange Coast, which captured the conference title.

The Pirates (53-17 in conference) finished fourth on the North course and second on the South course to earn 10 more victories in the 36-hole, one-day championship event and keep their distance in front of conference runner-up Santiago Canyon (46-24) and third-place finisher Palomar (42-28).

Cypress (41-29) ended up in fourth place.

The top three teams - Orange Coast, Santiago Canyon and Palomar - advanced to next Monday's Southern California regional championship event which will be held at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club in Costa Mesa.

The top 11 individuals with the lowest averages on the season earned all-conference recognition and will also play for individual honors at regionals.

Irvine Valley's low scorer was sophomore Michael Glauser, who just missed out on moving on to regionals.

He finished with a 36-hole total of 149.

Glauser shot 2 over par 74 on the south course and then a 1 over par 75 on the north course for his 149. He finished his sophomore season with a scoring average of 76.6.
