Basketball team loses two games in overtime in crossover event

A string of close losses continued for the Irvine Valley men's basketball team last week.

The Lasers dropped two games in overtime, including one in double OT as part of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference vs. Orange Empire Conference Crossover Classic.

Irvine Valley, Cypress, MiraCosta and Miramar took part in the event, which featured two games on Thursday evening at Irvine Valley and then two more games on Saturday at MiraCosta.

Irvine Valley lost to MiraCosta, 71-67, on Thursday at home.

The Lasers played a strong second half, but were out-scored, 13-9, in the overtime period by MiraCosta.

Sophomore forward David Georgiev finished with 15 points and six rebounds off the bench for IVC. Freshman forward Bryce Roczey had his best game as a Laser with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kevin Olsen added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists and sophomore guard DeVon Lamar had nine points and four assists for IVC.

Irvine Valley then took on Miramar on Saturday at MiraCosta.

IVC rallied late thanks to sophomore guard Geoff Salas, but fell in double overtime, 85-81.

Salas scored 10 points in the final 49 seconds in regulation to help Irvine Valley tie the score and send the game to overtime.

He played 31 minutes and shot 10 of 21 from the floor, including 7 of 11 from three-point range. Salas made 5 of 8 free throws and also added 11 rebounds in the defeat.

Roczey added nine points and 10 rebounds for Irvine Valley and Lamar finished with eight points, four rebounds and seven assists.

But the Lasers shot just 36.0 percent (27 of 75) from the floor in the game and had 22 turnovers.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 3-10 overall. The team now has seven losses by four points or less this year.

The Lasers play again in the Paul Landreaux Classic at El Camino College starting on Thursday. IVC takes on Bakersfield at 3 p.m. on Thursday and then Santa Monica at 5 p.m. on Friday.
