Men's basketball team edged by Ventura in third-place game

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team had its chances to come away with a big, early season win on the final day of its own tournament.

The Lasers led Ventura, by as many as seven points late in the first half, were up, 33-29, at half and tied with the Pirates late in the contest.

But, Ventura scored the final four points of the game and came away with a 63-59 win in the third-place contest of the Irvine Valley Classic on Saturday.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 2-3 on the year.

Sophomore guard Geoff Salas led Irvine Valley with 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field, 4 of 6 from three point range and 2 of 2 from the line.

Freshman forward Christian Louis added nine points and four rebounds, freshman point guard Sean Murphy finished with eight points and three assists and freshman post player Josh Walker grabbed nine rebounds and had six points for the Lasers.

But in the end, Irvine Valley shot just 42.5 percent (20 of 47) from the field, including 21.9 percent (4 of 19) from three-point range. The Lasers also missed eight free throws in the game.

Ventura was paced by Timothy Turner, who finished with 22 points, four assists and four steals.

Jelani Bell had 15 points and four rebounds and Thomas Dangerfield added 12 points for the Pirates, who improved their record to 3-3 on the year.

Ventura shot 50.0 percent (23 of 46) from the field in the game.

Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday at El Camino at 5 p.m.

In other games on the final day of the tournament on Saturday, American River topped Imperial Valley, 90-76, in a consolation game, Canyons beat Cuyamaca, 75-72, in the consolation final and in the championship game, Cerritos pulled away from Long Beach City in the second half to win, 89-64. Cerritos' Cody Wilkes was named the tournament's most valuable player.
