Men's basketball team wins consolation title at Saddleback

Irvine Valley scored 47 points in the first half and went on to a 87-75 win over MiraCosta in the Bill Brummel Classic at Saddleback on Saturday.

IVC won two of three games in the tournament and the game it lost was a two-point defeat to defending state champion San Diego City. San Diego City ended up winning the tourney title at Saddleback.

Irvine Valley had a big first half on Saturday, jumping out to a 47-33 lead over MiraCosta. IVC shot 52.8 percent (19 of 36), made six three-pointers and had 12 assists on its 19 made baskets in the first half. 

Sophomore forward Jake Linsky scored all 12 of hits points in the game in the opening half. He also had three rebounds and three steals in the contest.

Freshman forward Cameron Griffin chipped in 11 points and six rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

Irvine Valley cruised in the second half for the win. The Lasers led by as many as 19 points in the second half before winning by 12.

Freshman guard Daniel Chatman came up big for IVC for the second consecutive game. He finished with 20 points to pace the Lasers overall off the bench. Chatman made the winning free throws against Long Beach City in the final seconds of a win on Friday.

Chatman also contributed five rebounds and three assists on Saturday. Griffin ended with 17 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

Linsky had 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals for IVC.

Sophomore forward Zane Paddon chipped in 12 points and four rebounds, sophomore guard Daniel Hernandez had 10 points and three assists and sophomore guard Bekim Djokovic added nine points, three rebounds and two assists. 

Irvine Valley improved its record to 10-6 overall. The Lasers play again at home on Dec. 29, hosting LA Valley at 5:30 p.m.
