Irvine Valley Classic men's basketball tourney starts Thursday

The 23rd Annual Irvine Valley College Classic men's basketball tournament begins on Thursday afternoon with four games.

The Lasers open the tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday against Cuyamaca.

Games are at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday. Four more games will be played on Friday, starting at 1 p.m.

Saturday's last day of action will include the consolation final at 12 p.m., the third-place game at 2 p.m. and the championship at 4 p.m.

Teams participating in the event include Irvine Valley, Cuyamaca, Canyons, Cerritos, Imperial Valley, American River, Long Beach City and Ventura.

Canyons and Cerritos kick off the tourney on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Cerritos is the defending champion of the tournament and this year's top-ranked team heading in.

The Falcons were ranked No. 6 in the state and No. 4 in Southern California in the first California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association Poll.

Cerritos is off to a 3-0 start this season.

Ventura was ranked No. 15 in Southern California and has a 4-2 record so far.

Canyons and Irvine Valley were both teams that received votes in So. Cal.

Irvine Valley has a record of 3-1 so far. The Lasers finished in third place in the Miramar Tournament two weeks ago and then beat Southwestern, 75-58, at home last Friday night.

Freshman forward Jake Linsky is averaging 15.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game, freshman guard Daniel Hernandez is averaging 12.0 points and 3.3 assists per game and freshman forward Cameron Griffin is averaging 11.5 points and 5.3 rebounds to lead the way thus far for IVC.
