Men's basketball team wins cosolation title at Saddleback

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team won two of three games at the Brummel Classic at Saddleback last weekend.

Irvine Valley, which was ranked 18th in the state , improved its record to 11-4 overall.

The Lasers lost to eighth-ranked in the state Mt. San Jacinto, 78-71, to begin the event last Thursday. Mt. San Jacinto improved its record to 11-3.

The difference in the game was the free throw line where Mt. San Jacinto went 20 of 32. Irvine Valley was 11 of 15 from the line.

IVC had four players score in double figures in the contest. Freshman guard Isaiah Milan had 18 points, freshman guard Chris Lott added 14 points and sophomore forward Craig Magyar and freshman guard Mike Turner each had 11 points. Magyar added six rebounds and Turner had five rebounds and four assists.

But Irvine Valley bounced back with a 49-36 victory over Trade Tech on Friday and then a 65-61 win over Long Beach City on Saturday to finish up the tournament.

Against Trade Tech, Milan had 12 points and four assists in IVC's victory.

The Lasers held Trade Tech to just 15 points in the first half. And Trade Tech shot only 23.2 percent (13 of 56) for the game.

Irvine Valley also got eight points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Tanner Aguera in the victory.

In Irvine Valley's victory over Long Beach City, Magyar had 15 points and five rebounds and sophomore forward Jacob Dean contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.

Lott, who ended with eight points, hit a key shot in the final minute to put IVC ahead for good. 

Dean made two free throws to tie the score at 59-59 with 1:39 to play and then Lott hit a jumper with 52 seconds left to give Irvine Valley a 61-59 lead.

Long Beach City turned the ball over  on its next possession and then Turner was fouled. He made one free throw to put IVC up, 62-59.

After two Viking free throws, Irvine Valley freshman point guard Zuri Williams made one of two free throws to make it a 63-61 game.

Long Beach City missed a shot, got the offensive rebounds, but then turned the ball over with a second left.

After a technical foul was called on the Vikings, Magyar sank two free throws for the final score.

Milan was named to the all-tournament team for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley will play again on Dec. 30, hosting LA Valley at 6 p.m.

LA Valley has a record of 4-7 on the year. It won one of three games in the Glendale Tournament last week.

On the season for Irvine Valley, Milan is averaging 12.0 points and 2.7 assists per game.

Lott is averaging 7.5 points, Magyar is averaging 7.9 points and 4.4 rebounds, Turner averages 7.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals, Aguera is averaging 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds and Dean is averaging 6.7 points.
