Men's basketball team drops tough one in overtime to Chaffey

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team let one get away on Thursday in the opening round of the Bill Brummel Classic at Saddleback.

Irvine Valley fell to Chaffey, 66-60, in overtime.

The Lasers led for much of regulation.

Irvine Valley was up, 26-18, at the end of the first half.

IVC took a 41-35 lead on two free throws by freshman guard Jacob Short with 8:55 to play.

Chaffey tied the score at 43-43 before Irvine Valley sophomore guard Jimmy Golden sank a three-pointer to make it 46-43 with 6:48 left.

Chaffey later tied the game at 48-48 on three free throws by Breejae Flonnoy with 4:31 to go.

And Chaffey went ahead its next time down the floor after a jumper by Victor Joseph.

A tip in by sophomore center Andrew Bastien and two free throws by sophomore guard Jalen Hall gave IVC a 53-51 lead with 1:37 to play.

Chaffey went back on top, 54-53, on a three-pointer by Flonnoy.

Bastien gave Irvine Valley a 55-54 advantage with a basket inside with 1:09 to play.

Chaffey's Brandon Franklin was fouled with 36 seconds left and made one of two free throws to tie it up at 55-55.

Irvine Valley turned the ball over its next time down and Chaffey missed a shot as time expired in regulation.

After sophomore guard Chris Salas made two free throws early in overtime to put IVC ahead, 57-57, it was all Chaffey.

The Panthers scored the next eight points to go ahead, 63-57.

Irvine Valley got a three-pointer by Golden with 37 seconds left in overtime to make it 63-60.

But Chaffey made three of four free throws down the stretch for the win.

The defeat dropped Irvine Valley's record to 7-5 overall. Chaffey improved to 12-5.

Golden had 19 points and six rebounds to lead Irvine Valley. Bastien finished with nine points and 13 rebounds, Chris Porter had eight points and Hall contributed seven points for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley got beat on the boards, 44-35, shot just 34.5 percent (19 of 55) from the field and had four more turnovers than Chaffey (12 to 8) in the contest.

The Lasers slipped into the consolation bracket and will play San Diego City 1 p.m. on Friday.
