Men's basketball team tops Cypress for consolation title

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team finished the Santa Barbara Tournament by beating Orange Empire Conference rival Cypress, 68-54, in the consolation final on Saturday afternoon.

It was the first time the Lasers got to take on former IVC associate head coach and new Cypress head man Andrew Alhadeff.

Four of Irvine Valley's starters scored in double figures in the contest.

Sophomore guard Jimmy Golden led with 14 points. Sophomore point guard Jalen Hall added 13 points and sophomore forward Chris Porter and sophomore center Andrew Bastien contributed 11 points each.

The Lasers dominated inside, out-rebounding Cypress, 43-23.

Porter, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 13 rebounds. Bastien finished with 11 rebounds and Golden had seven rebounds.

The Lasers, who led, 33-25, at halftime, shot 46.8 percent (22 of 47) from the field as a team for the game. Cypress managed just 35.7 percent (20 of 56) shooting. The Chargers were paced by Jeremy Wright with 20 points and Jerred Cook with 15 points.

Irvine Valley finished with a record of 2-1 in the tournament and improved its record to  7-4 overall.

The Lasers will next play in the Saddleback Tournament on Thursday, taking on Chaffey.
