
Irvine Valley's baseball team was playing catch up from the start of Tuesday's Orange Empire Conference game against Santa Ana at home.
The Dons led, 4-1, after two innings and added three more in the top of the sixth on its way to a 10-2 victory over the Lasers in the first of a three-game series.
The two teams play again on Thursday at Santa Ana at 2 p.m. and then finish the set on Friday at IVC at 2 p.m.
An RBI double by Austin Haller started the scoring for the Dons in the first inning and Santa Ana never looked back.
Haller and Christian Thompson each went 3 for 5 with two RBI for SAC. Mario Tostado added three hits, two walks and two runs scored for the Dons in the win.
Right-hander Brady Ashworth went eight innings and gave up just two runs (one earned) on nine hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Irvine Valley scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by freshman third baseman Conner Hoskinson. The Lasers' other run came in the bottom of the seventh inning on an infield single by sophomore shortstop Nick Madole.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Sammy Murphy (3-5) took the loss. He allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Hoskinson had two hits on the day for IVC.
