Baseball team gets back to winning ways at LA Valley Tuesday

The Irvine Valley baseball team got a strong effort on the mound from sophomore right-hander Sammy Murphy on its way to a 5-2 win at LA Valley Tuesday afternoon.

The Lasers bounced back from two, tough one-run losses in a doublehader at home on Sunday against Grossmont.

Murphy was the difference Tuesday to get IVC back in the win column.

He improved his record to 3-1 on the season by going eight innings and allowing just one run. Murphy gave up four hits and two walks and had six strikeouts.

Sophomore righty reliever Nate Skorheim earned his second save by getting the final out of the game.

At the plate, sophomore second baseman Nolan Cusey stood out. He went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Cusey's two-run single in the top of the sixth put Irvine Valley ahead, 3-1.

Sophomore catcher Connor Tallakson added an RBI double in the top of the eighth that scored freshman third baseman Kevin James and made it a 4-1 game.

Irvine Valley scored its final run llater in the inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder Seth Bougher.

James earned three walks and scored two runs on the day for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 9-7 overall and will host LA Valley on Thursday at 1 p.m.
