Baseball team pushes across run in the ninth for win at Mesa

Irvine Valley's baseball team led, 9-4, heading into the bottom of the eighth inning at San Diego Mesa on Tuesday afternoon.

Soon, it was 9-9, after the Olympians put up five runs in their half of the frame.

But the Lasers pulled out a win with a run in the top of the ninth and saw sophomore righty Nate Skorheim finish on the mound in a 10-9 victory.

It was a big win for Irvine Valley, which snapped a three-game skid.

In the top of the ninth inning, sophomore left fielder Drew Porter singled, sophomore designated hitter Adrian Reveles walked, and after an out, sophomore first baseman Casey Kudell was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

With two outs, Porter scored on a wild pitch for the game-winning run.

Skorheim loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but closed out the game with a fly out to center field.

The win pushed Irvine Valley's record to 5-4 overall.

For IVC, freshman third baseman Kevin James went 3 for 5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. 

Freshman center fielder Shane Stafford also hit a home run for IVC and went 1 for 3 with two walks and three RBI.

Freshman second baseman Darren Shorter finished 1 for 3 with a double, two walks and two RBI.

The Lasers were up 5-0 after three innings. James hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning and Stafford smashed a three-run home run in the top of the third.

Skorheim earned the win on the mound, pitching two innings. He gave up one run on four hits and one walk.

Sophomore right-hander Sammy Murphy started for the Lasers and went six innings, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.

Irvine Valley hosts San Diego Mesa on Thursday at 1 p.m.
