Baseball team gets behind early, can't catch Mt. SAC

It was a rough start for the Irvine Valley baseball team in the opener of a four-game series with Mt. San Antonio on Tuesday night at the OC Great Park Stadium.

The Mounties scored seven runs in the first two innings on their way to a 8-3 win over the Lasers. 

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 11-12-2 overall and Mt. SAC improved to 13-12.

The two teams meet again on Thursday at the Great Park at 6:30 p.m.

Mt. SAC scored three runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning. Manny Casillas had a two-run triple and Jason Flores grounded out to bring in a run to get Mt. SAC going in the first inning.

Freshman right-hander Jeremy Wiegman started on the mound for IVC, but was forced to leave the game after a batter.

The Lasers capped their scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning when sophomore center fielder Joey Lapolla hit a solo home run over the left field fence. It was his second homer of the season.

Lapolla finished going 3 for 3 with the home run, a walk, one run and one RBI. Freshman shortstop Shane Kary had two hits for IVC.

Wiegman, although facing only one batter, took the loss, giving up one run on one hit.

It was a staff day for Mt. SAC on the mound. Matt Mattingly started and went the first three innings, giving up two runs one hit and one walk with four strikeouts for the victory.

Casillas was 3 for 4 with three RBI and Flores went 2 for 5 with two RBI for the Mounties.
