Baseball team ties, comes up short in doubleheader vs. OCC

Irvine Valley's baseball tied and lost to Orange Coast in a doubleheader at the OC Great Park on Friday afternoon.

The Lasers scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to help earn a 3-3 tie with the Pirates in the opening game, which was slated for seven innings.

The two teams played one more inning to try and decide things with each squad placing a runner on second base to start the inning, but neither Orange Coast or Irvine Valley could cash in a run and the game ended tied.

Freshman right fielder Jack Haggerty had three hits and sophomore center fielder Joey Lapolla went 2 for 3 with two RBI. Freshman first baseman Casey Kudell drove in the other run for IVC.

Tyler Weaver and Beau Johnson each recorded two hits for OCC.

Freshman right-hander Dallas Carpenter started on the mound for the Lasers and went 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Freshman lefty Martin Najera pitched the final 3.1 innings and didn't allow a run. He gave up two hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Orange Coast scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to break things open and went on for a 8-2 victory.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings and then the Pirates scored single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings. Chazz Martinez hit a solo homer in the fourth.

OCC then put four runs on the board in the fifth to make it a 6-0 game.

In the fifth inning, David Morgan had a two-run single to left and Martinez hit his second home run of the game - this one a two run shot.

The Pirates upped their advantage to 8-0 in the top of the eighth inning on Nolan Funke's two-run single.

Irvine Valley got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning on a OCC throwing error and freshman first baseman Sam Grayston was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Freshman righty Ian Green took the loss for IVC. He went five innings and allowed six runs on seve hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday in a conference game at Fullerton at 2 p.m.
