Baseball team battles, falls to Cypress in 2021 opener

After more than a year of not competing, the Irvine Valley baseball team was back in a real game Tuesday night at the OC Great Park Stadium in Irvine.

The Lasers battled and had their chances, but fell to a tough Cypress team, 3-0.

Cypress scored one run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Coby Morales after an IVC passed ball allowed a runner to advance from first to third.

And then the Chargers added two runs in the top of the third on a groundout by Pu'ukani De Sa and a RBI single by Dalton Sloniger.

Irvine Valley had six hits and four walks and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Lasers also put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but could't cash in.

Morales and Andrew Sojka each had two hits for Cypress.

Sophomore outfielder Kyle Dobson finished with two hits, including a double for IVC.

Freshman righty Jeremy Wiegman started on the mound for the Lasers and took the loss. He went five innings and allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) with nine strikeouts. 

The Lasers also got a solid performance in relief from freshman left-hander Seth Bougher. He went 3.2 innnings, allowing no hits with three strikeouts.

Brett Garcia earned the win on the mound for Cypress. He went five shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

Julian Aguilar earned the save, working out of a jam in the ninth inning.

The two teams play again on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the OC Great Park on Field 9.
