Baseball team drops conference series against Cypress

Irvine Valley's baseball team lost, 5-2, at Cypress on Saturday on the road and dropped the Orange Empire Conference season series with Chargers.

Cypress won two of three games.

Five errors hurt the Lasers in the defeat.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 17-11-1 overall and 3-9 in conference. Cypress improved to 21-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Cypress scored two runs in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings and then added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Irvine Valley scored its two runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Freshman outfielder Chris Lopez doubled to left center to bring in sophomores David Rojas and Ben McConnell.

Sophomore right-hander Chad Burchit took the loss for the Lasers. He went 3.2 innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk.

Sophomores Matt Wong and Paul Colignon, freshman Dane Little and sophomore Noah Bradford finished out the game on the mound.

Colignon pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and had two strikeouts.

Adrian Chaidez got the win for Cypress. He went five scoreless innings to improve to 6-0. He allowed four hits and three walks and struck out five batters.

IVC had eight hits on the day.

Freshman first baseman Pu'ukani De Sa was 2 for 4 and Lopez went 1 for 1 with two RBI.

Irvine Valley starts a three-game conference series with the top-ranked team in the state, Riverside, on Tuesday at home at 2 p.m.
