Dunham pitches another gem as baseball team shuts out East LA

It wasn't a no-hitter like last week, but Irvine Valley sophomore Justin Dunham pitched another gem, shutting out East LA to give Irvine Valley another victory on Tuesday afternoon at home.

The right-handed Dunham improved his record to 3-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to 1.00 on the season with the complete-game shutout Tuesday. He gave up just four hits and one walk and had five strikeouts.

And Irvine Valley moved its overall record to 14-2-1 overall. East LA fell to 7-9 overall.

The Lasers scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against East LA starting pitcher Steven Villagran, who also pitched well.

Sophomore center fielder Ben McConnell drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single.

And then freshman left fielder Kyle Dobson hit a two-run single to right center to give Irvine Valley a 3-0 advantage.

That was more than enough for Dunham, who has hasn't given up an earned run in his last 23.2 innings of work.

Irvine Valley finished with 10 hits on the day. Dobson went 2 for 4 with two RBI, sophomore second baseman Trent Whitaker was 2 for 4 and sophomore third baseman David Rojas went 2 for 3 for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers don't play again until Orange Empire Conference action begins next week. The Lasers start with a three-game series against Santa Ana. IVC plays at Santa Ana next Tuesday at 2 p.m.
