Irvine Valley's baseball team and sophomore pitcher Matt Wong didn't let a little foul weather get in the way of their unbeaten streak on Thursday afternoon.
Wong, in his first collegiate start, pitched five solid innings to lift IVC to a 6-2 victory over San Diego City.
The game was halted after 5 ½ innings because of lightning, thunder, high winds, rain and then hail at Irvine Valley.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 11-1-1 overall. The Lasers are unbeaten in their last 11 games with 10 of those games being wins.
Wong pitched five innings and gave up two runs (none earned) on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
IVC's offense staked him to a lead early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning off of San Diego City lefty Joe Dowdy
Freshman leftfielder Kyle Dobson knocked in the first two runs with a single to right field.
Freshman shortstop Robert Haw followed with an RBI groundout.
And then sophomore right fielder Michael Hascup beat out an RBI infield single to give Irvine Valley a 4-0 lead.
The Lasers added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning another RBI hit by Dobson and then a San Diego City error.
The Knights scored their two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The first came on a groundout that IVC turned as a double play and then Nick Mora drove in a run with an RBI single.
Dobson was 2 for 3 with three RBI, sophomore second baseman Trent Whitaker went 2 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored, Hascup was 2 for 2 with one RBI and sophomore center fielder Ben McConnell was 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored.
The game was the first of three straight at home for the Lasers. Irvine Valley next hosts Allan Hancock on Friday at 1 p.m.
