Baseball team finishes Buttles tourney with a win over COD

Irvine Valley's baseball team won its fourth straight game and wrapped up the Buttles Tournament at College of the Desert with a perfect record after beating host COD, 10-8, in 11 innings on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lasers improved their record to 5-1 overall.

Irvine Valley trailed, 8-6, after seven innings but rallied to tie the score and then win in extra innings.

IVC finished with 17 hits in the game, which took more than four hours to play.

Sophomore second baseman Trent Whitaker led the way on offense by going 4 for 6 with three RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore third baseman David Rojas was 3 for 5 with a triple, walk, one RBI and three runs and freshman first baseman Pu'ukani De Sa was 3 for 7 with a triple and three RBI.

Freshman left fielder Kyle Dobson added two hits and one RBI and freshman shortstop Robert Haw and freshman designated hitter Joey Lapolla each had two hits for the Lasers in the win.

De Sa hit a two-run triple to right field for IVC in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game, 8-8.

And in the top of the 11th inning, the Lasers took the lead for good.

Dobson drove in a run with a single to right to put the Lasers ahead and then Whitaker had an infield single for an RBI to put IVC ahead, 10-8.

Sophomore returning all-state reliever Noah Bradford closed the door for Irvine Valley.

Coach Kent Madole brought in Bradford in the bottom of the seventh inning and he finished out the game.

He went 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up five hits and a walk with two strikeouts to pick up the win.

Sophomore Keenan Cisneros started on the mound for the Lasers. He went six innings and gave up four runs (three earned)on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday at Mt. San Jacinto at 2 p.m.
