Baseball team picks up big conference win at Cypress

Irvine Valley's baseball team rebounded from a tough loss against Cypress on Tuesday at home with one of its biggest wins of the season at home on Thursday.

The Lasers scored eight runs in the first four innings and knocked off Cypress, which went into the game ranked No. 12 in the state, 8-4, on the road.

Irvine Valley moved to 16-17 overall and 6-8 in the Orange Empire Conference. Cypress fell to 22-11 overall and 7-7 in conference. 

IVC took solid approaches at the plate all game long.

Sophomore shortstop Colin Conroy went 2 for 5 with a run scored and two RBI and freshman center fielder Ben McConnell was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and three walks. McConnell continued to shine at the plate on the year. His average is at .366 with 17 walks to just 16 strikeouts.

The Lasers had 10 hits in the game, worked six walks and stole four bases. They also took advantage of four Cypress errors in the contest.

Freshman right-hander Keenan Cisneros was the winner. He pitched 5.1 effective innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts. He went to 2-2 on the year.

Freshman righty Chad Burchit took over and went 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and one walk with one strikeout.

And freshman Noah Bradford got the final out with a strikeout to end things. He earned his second save on the year.

IVC stared the game by getting a run in the first inning. Freshman third baseman Dustin Angus' groundout scored a run.

The Lasers then exploded for four runs in the top of the second. Freshman catcher Ryan Santa Cruz, Conroy, sophomore right fielder Zach Stack and Angus each had RBI singles in the inning.

IVC added two runs in the third and got another in the fourth on a sac fly by sophomore first baseman Cooper Moore.

The rubber game of the three-game conference series is on Friday at Irvine Valley at 2 p.m.
