Freshman right-handed pitcher Nick Janowicz turned in an impressive eight innings on the mound and the Irvine Valley baseball team defeated San Diego City, 6-2, in a nonconference game at home on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Lasers took both games in the two-game series against the Knights. IVC topped San Diego City, 10-5, on Tuesday in San Diego.
Irvine Valley moved its record to 9-6 overall after Thursday's victory. San Diego City slipped to 7-5 overall.
Janowicz improved to 3-1 on the year with eight shutout innings. He came out for the top of the ninth inning with a 6-0 lead, but gave up two runs.
Janowicz was still solid, giving up just the two runs on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
Freshman Noah Bradford got all three outs in the top of the ninth. He gave up one hit and had two strikeouts.
Irvine Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control.
Freshman second baseman Dustin Angus had an infield hit to bring in the first run and then sophomore right fielder Grant Rockefeller walked with the bases loaded to make it a 2-0 game.
Sophomore first baseman Cooper Moore gave Irvine Valley a 3-0 lead when he sprinted home on a wild pitch.
The Lasers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Moore scored again on another wild pitch and sophomore catcher Ryan Gaynor brought in a run with a groundout.
Freshman third baseman David Rojas capped Irvine Valley's scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI single.
Freshman center fielder Ben McConnell and sophomore designated hitter Zack Stack each had two hits on the day for IVC.
Jonathon Sandberg, Cesar Fitch and Joey Wozniak all had two hits for San Diego City.
Anders Tolhurst took the loss on the mound for the Knights, going 5.2 innings and giving up five runs on six hits and five walks with six strikeouts.
Irvine Valley plays again at home on Friday, hosting Allan Hancock at 1 p.m.
